Spice It Up, Buttercup

It’s another busy week here in Louisville and we’re here to help you kick start the weekend.   Whether your young or old, have kids or just a kid at heart; we’ve got you covered.  What’s on the radar this week?  Events to add plenty of spice to your life:  food, drinks, exercise (because your going to need it after all the food and drinks), storytelling, lip dupping and “disTRUCKtion”, just to name a few.

Wednesday (10/17) Rayna Gellert +Daniel Bachman + Nathan Salsburg - Impromptu live music session tonight at Please and Thank You 7 - 8:45 pm. Event is free, but  donations to touring musicians is encouraged.  Here’s more info about the musicians: Rayna Gellert,  Daniel Bachman and Nathan Salsburg.

Wednesday (10/17) Taste of Louisville 2012 - We all know that Louisville is a serious foodie town and  here’s your chance to sample Louisville’s best appetizers, entrees, desserts, cocktails and more.  The theme this year is “speakeasy” so dress to impress.  Party starts at 6 pm at The Mellwood Arts Center and tickets are $65/person.

Thursday (10/18) The Moth StorySLAM - Are you a great story teller? Why not share your skills at this open-mic themed story telling event.  Place your name in the hat between 7 and 8 pm, 10 storytellers will be randomly selected to present and a team of audience judges will decide your fate.  Location this month is Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft and the theme is MUSE.

Friday (10/19) DisTRUCKtion at Apocalypse Brew Works - Evening filled with food trucks, beer and awesome tunes at Apocalypse Brew Works from 5 - 10 pm.  Trucks attending include Lil Cheezers, Holy Mole, Grind, Bluegrass Brick Oven Pizza, French Indo-Canada and Annie May’s Sweet Cafe.  To quote the Facebook event page, ” Grab some friends, grab a beer and some grub and get ready for a night of total disTRUCKtion!” We’ll cheers to that!

Saturday (10/20) Mayor’s Fall Hike and Outdoor Adventure - Perfect excuse to get some exercise and check out the fall foliage at Jefferson Memorial Forest.  Enjoy family-friendly activities from 9 am - 2 pm, including a 5 k race, forest hike, pumpkins and pumpkin decorating and hay rides.

 

Saturday (10/20) First Friday Trolley Hop Lip Dub - What’s a Lip Dub? Flash mob,  lip sync and music video all rolled into one, check out Grand Rapids Lip Dub.  Video shooting starts at noon at Whiskey Row and will finish a few hours later in the NULU district.  Want to participate? Be on the streets singing, dancing, or doing  whatever other crazy creative thing you can  think up.

Saturday (10/20) Twilight Tour of Cave Hill Cemetery - With the exception of guided tours, Cave Hill Cemetery shuts its gate at dusk.  Here’s your chance to see it  in a whole new light (or lack there of).  Hop on a tram and explore with grounds with guide Steve Wiser.  The tour is historically focused, but we’re betting it might be a little creepy too.  Perfect to get you in the Halloween mood.

Sunday (10/21) Fright Light Halloween Parties - family friendly event with Halloween-themed games and Fright Light Laser Music Show at University of Louisville Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium from from 3-6 pm.  Admission is $5 per person.

On the Radar

October 24 Original Highlands Ghost Tour - explore the history and haunts of one of Louisville’s oldest and most eclectic neighborhoods.  Mention New2Lou and get a 10% discount.  Tour starts at Bearnos at 8 pm, so plan to grab a drink or two before hand.  More details will be posted soon, so stay tuned.

Oct 26 – 28 Old Louisville Victorian Ghost Walk - The Victorian Ghost Walk showcases the spooky history of America’s most haunted neighborhood as revelers roam the streets and listen to costumed storytellers recounting ghostly tales from the past. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.
